I am from New York and this is the only time I felt compelled to sign up and comment about a person on a TV show.

This Stephen Fowler is malignant narcissist, the same phrase which was given to Saddam Hussein and he needs to be deported back to the UK. It is blatantly obvious he only married that woman to gain US citizenship. He has his wife brainwashed to the point that she is not proud of being an American and she should go with him.

malignant narcissism Psychiatry A range of psychopathic personality disorders characterized by the coexistence of marked narcissistic and antisocial traits. See Sociopath. Cf Serial killer.

I hold three doctorate degrees and if I ever acted like him I’d want someone to just shoot me. His actual educational level is very questionable. A bachelor’s degree in the UK only takes three years to obtain, if he even has that.

As a mental health professional, I have counselled state and federal prisioners who come out of prision with anger issues at the rate of 120 every six months. This man is more anger than any I have delt with and they include murderers, rapists, arsonists and burglars.

STEPHEN FOWLER’S APOLOGY ON ABC wifeswap message board

I hope you will take this as a sincere and unequivocal apology. I have been completely taken aback by the response my behavior generated and it has taken a while for me to figure out what to say. I’m not doing this to try and redeem myself. Rather I’m trying to try and undo some of the hurt that people have obviously felt as a result of my comments.

Clearly I behaved like a complete jerk and I am deeply sorry for all the offense I have caused. I’m not going to hide behind excuses, I showed an extraordinary level of stupidity and arrogance. I will do my best to address most of the criticism directed at me. If I miss something out, however, it is not because I do not deem it important, it is just that there is rather a lot to cover.

First off, let me say I am deeply sorry for the terribly insulting way I treated Gayla during the show. She is a very pleasant person and clearly did not deserve to be treated that way. In fact, no one deserves to be treated that way. I was a bully, and it was just plain unacceptable. Once again, I offer my sincere apologies to Gayla, Alan, and their boys.

Some of my remarks obviously made me appear unpatriotic. Well that was just dumb. I chose to become a US citizen because I deeply respect the values upon which this great country is based. For the record, I think the US is an amazing country and I can’t think of anywhere I’d rather live. And while I do not happen to believe the Iraq war is a good idea, I do have a huge amount of respect for all the personnel who serve in the US military. They have the toughest job in the world and I am truly grateful for the sacrifices that they make to protect this country.

I used gross generalizations about Midwesterners and I am deeply sorry for any hurt I caused with these statements. My comments were just stupid and made me look like the one who is undereducated. Some of my best friends are Midwesterners, which shows how truly dumb my comments were.

I also deeply regret that my actions reflected badly on the environmental organizations with which I am affiliated, and were of disservice to the environmental movement as a whole. I’ve resigned both my nonprofit board positions and would ask you to not judge these organizations by my actions. I offer my sincere apologies to all the staff and board members.

Further, I regret that my remarks made me come across as a person who disrespects overweight people. I do not disrespect anyone for being overweight and I deeply regret that my remarks suggested I do. My wife has devoted her career to helping people and my comments reflect poorly on her and her heart-felt work. I apologize for my extreme insensitivity to her clients and her mission. Please don’t judge Renee by my actions.

I also want to apologize to my family and friends and thank them for their support, which I scarcely deserve. I believe we can all grow from experiences and I will work to ensure this experience teaches me to become a better, more compassionate person.

Finally I want to be clear that these are my words and I have received no input from anyone else, not even my wife. I hope this apology will be taken in the true spirit it was given.

My take on his apology:

Regarding the apology letter from (purportedly) Stephen Fowler that just went up on the Wife Swap message boards. I don’t buy it as sincere for a minute, I think it is a desperate attempt to salvage his financial situation and his social reputation rather than any true remorse. And he mentions nothing about the affect he has had on his children by modeling and encouraging verbal and emotional abuse. So now he is saying that he doesn’t really ascribe to or believe any of the many offensive comments that came out of his mouth? So what was he demonically possessed?

SHUT UP, NIGGER!!!
http://www.stephenfowlersucks.com
If Mrs. Long had been black and he had called her a nigger, this thing would be all over the media like Imus. If Stephen was gay and Mrs. Long called him a faggot, then this would have the ACLU in an uproar. But because he called her fat and redneck, it seems that it’s not *as bad* and that there is some kind of time table as to when our outrage should be “let go”.
This lame attempt at “Damage Control” is so transparent, Renee. Again, you are placing the blame, ultimately, on the Director who asked you “direct” and “probing” questions as to what level of education you thought the people in the home had. And YOU responded in a judgemental and elitist way with giggle and, “I’m betting they don’t have ‘advanced’ degrees.” (Like YOU do? Come on, a few cheap as dirt ‘certifications’ in neurolinguistic psycho-babble and “life coaching”. Please.)
Then, you go on to place the blame on the editors. Those unfair editors who made it look like you said what you said, the way you said it.
We can see right through you, dear. You and your husband are reptilian elitists who use wordy prose to deceive and manipulate well-meaning people. According to your own friends, you were all “laughing hysterically” when the calls started coming in the night of the airing of the show with people wanting to know why Stephen was so mean. You’re just sorry you got caught.

That Stephen Fowler is a horse’s ass has been fully established. What I find most amusing about the couple is Renee.

I’m certain that “life coaches” and the empathy or sympathy of speaking to another about one’s problems can be therapeutic and I’m certain that someone, somewhere has improved their circumstances as a result of objective and dispassionate advice and encouragement. And Renee should be very proud of overcoming her own struggles with food and her weight.

However, as the show opened with her reciting her resume on-air as an in-story resume, I was amused, though not bemused, at her careful inclusion of “certified” before every profession she professes to practice. Not only has any quality practitioner of any profession I’ve ever met not felt the need to emphasize some sort of legitimacy to their title, “Licensed Surgeon Dr. Smith will be happy to see you now…”, but I wonder why so few ever stop to ask the question, “Certified? By whom?”

As far as I know, there is no regulatory body in California (or elsewhere) that vets the credentials or imposes professional standards upon so-called “Life Coaches”. The kind of “certified” she proclaims can be bestowed by anyone, anywhere. Perhaps quite ironically, if she claims any sort of legitimacy to her “certification”, she must also accept with full faith and credit that her husband/partner must be the Certifiable Horse’s Ass the public has rightfully identified him to be.

Though her children are certainly a mitigating consideration, if she otherwise continues to abide or support her Stephen Fowler in any way, she is fully responsible for any reputational damage that results from the company she chooses to keep and for permitting her children to be raised in such an environment.

As Stephen’s conduct seems to be having very real consequences upon his professional standing, I wonder how long the twinkle in Renee’s eye will continue to sparkle for him, especially if the blowback rightfully affects her professional endeavors as well.

I am a Brit living abroad in Holland and have just viewed excerpts from the infamous Wife swap episode that has enraged so many.

I know that WS is entertainment and that some of the behaviour is egged on by producers and so forth.

But this man has succeeded in crystalising a new version of a horrid stereotype “the arrogant Englishman” or Nasty Nick as he was once called here.It is difficult to believe some of the things he said and his views.,They were man and wife both dreadful.

It s a bloody shame that this fool has done this as countless innocent , perfectly reasonable, middle class Brits will be seen in a new light by many Americans.

thanks a bloody lot Stephen Fowler, you Wanker! ( British for useless person)

One thing that stood out for me as I watched the Wife Swap episode, both families were/are in trouble, they are both at the far extreme, one family lives for the moment and does not see the effect on their children, but they are also rational, loving family that only want the best for their boys, so to change would not be that difficult, you could see that at the end of the show.
The Fowler family however, what can I say, Renee says she wants Steve to get professional help, she needs help also major help, she lives in a would where going on tv was probably not a big step for her as her whole life is a show, look at me I spend no time with my children, but they go the expensive schools, take lessons for this or that, Steve seemed to nurce that glass of wine more than his own children, who in their right mind would talk like that in front of their beautiful children. I have seen families like this and for the Fowlers having children was like buying that expensive SUV crossover or what every he was driving. Yes I was very bothered by the comments made by this very angry man, but what I could not get over is the abuse the Fowler children are suffering, and I am speaking of before the show, a court would take children away from a mother who was a crack head, for neglecting her children, is this family any different, just because you put your children in every thing under the sun and you are pushing them to get a good education does not mean that you are not neglecting your children, these children have no spark they are little robots going through life programed by their parents. And what if for some reason Renee suddenly gained weight because of medical reasons can you image the abuse from Steve in front of those poor children.

Just FYI, this is the course Fowler taught at University of SF Business School:

http://www.beyondgreypinstripes.org/search/search_course_results.cfm?cids=498&dept=Corporate%20Responsibility/Business%20Ethics

Best to let them know he’s not a desirable candidate for a position there.
