These so-called “reality” shows are cast the same way a television drama or sitcom is cast. The players are interviewed extensively and questioned about their likes and dislikes. They get on the show based on their personalities. Every show needs an outrageous personality, or “villain”. That’s why people watch these programs. Fowler’s flaws, which are not unlike many of our own, are simply being exploited by the shows producers. The whole series is taped and edited BEFORE it goes on the air, so that it’s too late for any of the players to modify their behavior and avoid being hated by the audience. In effect, it’s no different than “Borat”. People didn’t know until after the fact just how idiotic they actually looked. Why so many people watch this manipulative, exploitive crap is beyond me.

One thing that stood out for me as I watched the Wife Swap episode, both families were/are in trouble, they are both at the far extreme, one family lives for the moment and does not see the effect on their children, but they are also rational, loving family that only want the best for their boys, so to change would not be that difficult, you could see that at the end of the show.
The Fowler family however, what can I say, Renee says she wants Steve to get professional help, she needs help also major help, she lives in a would where going on tv was probably not a big step for her as her whole life is a show, look at me I spend no time with my children, but they go the expensive schools, take lessons for this or that, Steve seemed to nurce that glass of wine more than his own children, who in their right mind would talk like that in front of their beautiful children. I have seen families like this and for the Fowlers having children was like buying that expensive SUV crossover or what every he was driving. Yes I was very bothered by the comments made by this very angry man, but what I could not get over is the abuse the Fowler children are suffering, and I am speaking of before the show, a court would take children away from a mother who was a crack head, for neglecting her children, is this family any different, just because you put your children in every thing under the sun and you are pushing them to get a good education does not mean that you are not neglecting your children, these children have no spark they are little robots going through life programed by their parents. And what if for some reason Renee suddenly gained weight because of medical reasons can you image the abuse from Steve in front of those poor children.

I am a Brit living abroad in Holland and have just viewed excerpts from the infamous Wife swap episode that has enraged so many.

I know that WS is entertainment and that some of the behaviour is egged on by producers and so forth.

But this man has succeeded in crystalising a new version of a horrid stereotype “the arrogant Englishman” or Nasty Nick as he was once called here.It is difficult to believe some of the things he said and his views.,They were man and wife both dreadful.

It s a bloody shame that this fool has done this as countless innocent , perfectly reasonable, middle class Brits will be seen in a new light by many Americans.

That Stephen Fowler is a horse’s ass has been fully established. What I find most amusing about the couple is Renee.

I’m certain that “life coaches” and the empathy or sympathy of speaking to another about one’s problems can be therapeutic and I’m certain that someone, somewhere has improved their circumstances as a result of objective and dispassionate advice and encouragement. And Renee should be very proud of overcoming her own struggles with food and her weight.

However, as the show opened with her reciting her resume on-air as an in-story resume, I was amused, though not bemused, at her careful inclusion of “certified” before every profession she professes to practice. Not only has any quality practitioner of any profession I’ve ever met not felt the need to emphasize some sort of legitimacy to their title, “Licensed Surgeon Dr. Smith will be happy to see you now…”, but I wonder why so few ever stop to ask the question, “Certified? By whom?”

As far as I know, there is no regulatory body in California (or elsewhere) that vets the credentials or imposes professional standards upon so-called “Life Coaches”. The kind of “certified” she proclaims can be bestowed by anyone, anywhere. Perhaps quite ironically, if she claims any sort of legitimacy to her “certification”, she must also accept with full faith and credit that her husband/partner must be the Certifiable Horse’s Ass the public has rightfully identified him to be.

Though her children are certainly a mitigating consideration, if she otherwise continues to abide or support her Stephen Fowler in any way, she is fully responsible for any reputational damage that results from the company she chooses to keep and for permitting her children to be raised in such an environment.

As Stephen’s conduct seems to be having very real consequences upon his professional standing, I wonder how long the twinkle in Renee’s eye will continue to sparkle for him, especially if the blowback rightfully affects her professional endeavors as well.
